Wild-foraged Mushroom Certification Program

Working in partnership with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), MAMI offers a workshop program that, if successfully completed, will qualify you as an expert mushroom identifier who can lawfully broker select wild-foraged Michigan mushrooms.

This program teaches participants about Michigan regulations regarding the sale of wild-foraged mushrooms in Michigan.

Additionally, there are opportunities to:

  • Become familiar species of wild mushrooms allowed to be collected and sold in Michigan
  • Meet with noted mycologists
  • Review mushroom identification

At the end of the workshop, participants take a written exam which, if successfully completed, qualifies them to receive an Expert Mushroom Identifier card issued by MDARD.

Registration is open for 2024 Wild-foraged Mushroom Certification workshops. MAMI is pleased to host workshops at 6 locations around Michigan….based on input you submitted via the Update and Notification list! Click on the following link for all workshop and registration details.

Michigan Wild-foraged Mushroom Recertification

Recertification for the Michigan Wild-foraged Mushroom program is offered to people whose certificates have expired, or will soon expire.

Recertifications must be completed by the end of the following year after the certification has expired. If recertification is not completed by this time, attendance at a workshop and an in-person exam is required.

There are two ways to recertify:

  • Online
  • In person, at an upcoming workshop (Workshop not included)
Click here for more information on Michigan Wild-foraged Mushroom Recertifications

The cost is $75 per recertification and, as before, is valid for five years.

For your convenience, payment and registration is available on the website.  Participants are required to complete and submit a brief survey; upon receipt of the completed survey, online exam access and instructions will be provided.

We encourage prospective participants to study and review the comprehensive online curriculum materials found on the Midwest American Mycological Information’s website: Mushroom Study.

At this time, the only option to recertify an expired or expiring Wild-foraged Mushroom Certification is online. In-person recertification will become available as soon as the dates and locations are confirmed for full, in-person Wild-foraged Mushroom Certification workshops.

Please click here to register for online recertification.

Michigan Wild-foraged MOREL Mushroom Certification Program

Certification in the Michigan Wild-foraged MOREL Mushroom program typically occurs in February/March and is required for persons who intend on selling only Morels. This Workshop and Exam is completely virtual via Zoom.

Click here for more information on Michigan Wild-foraged Morel Mushroom Certifications

In order to sell Morels in Michigan, a person must attend the Morel Mushroom Workshop as well as pass a written exam with a score of 80% or higher.  MAMI will send the results to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) who will then issue an official certificate.

Exams are administered and proctored at the end of the 1-2 hour Workshop.  If attendees do not meet the 80% or higher requirement to pass the exam, the person has two additional attempts to take the exam.

The cost is $75 per certification and, as with other certifications, is valid for five years.  Anyone certified in the Wild-foraged Morel Mushroom Certification program can attend the complete, 20+ species Wild-foraged Mushroom Certification Program at a discount rate.

If you have any questions, please email them to MAMI
